We went through a lot
of heavy rain all these recent days at the Cheow Lan
reservoir. I had to crawl in the mud and walk through
the jungle only to do a few casts at some Mahseer
streams. I had to wadd through heavy aquatic vegetation
to cast top water lures at snakeheads. I had my share of
mosquito bites and any other hardcore fioshing
adventures which I know you would have loved so much to
share with us. It was real wild jungle stuff with
breathtaking sceneries. Lots of animals around us: mouse
deers, barking deers, wild buffalos, bucks, elephants,
all sorts of monkeys, and lots of snakes too (we saw
several cobra and king cobra passing by on top water).

I had all the luck in
the world. Everything was going my way. It was almost
like a dream. Anything I had in mind just materialized.
Everyday, for 4 days in a row, I was catching the
biggest and the best fish. Rick, Pierre, Kik, Lek, who
did not do too well, and all the local people living
there, could not believe the luck I was having.

A part of lots of big size jungle perch catches and a
lovely 6.40 kg female giant snakehead (the biggest ever
seen by our boatmen) I nailed, I caught each rare
species of the Cheow Lan reservoir I was after. I had
the Grand Chelem: an Emperor toman bunga (Channa
marulioides), a Thai Mahseer (Tor tambroides), and a
Blotched Snakehead (Channa lucius).

For the anecdote, I
caught that 1.85 kg Channa lucius on a Rapala X-Rap 10
orange color......which that belongs to my friend
Richard. I borrowed it from his big stock of brand new
Rapala he left at my home. I took only one lure out of
the stock. I guess I chose the right one. C.lucius at
that kind of weight are extremely scarce. FishBase gives
40 cm for the maximum length of that fish. Mine was
total length 56.5 cm. I am submitting this great catch
with the IGFA for a first entry in the world records
list.
