Reuben Hewitt & Jonathan Bartley from Northern Ireland had one of those very special days while fishing for Pike out of Portarra Lodge, Moycullen. Both men are frequent visitors to Portarra and know all the "hot spots" where to fish for those great fighting fish.
Things did not get off to a great start as they left without their Pack Lunch and said that they would return for their lunch to the Lodge around 1.30 pm. Actually it was after 7.30 pm when the two arrived and the excitment of the days fishing would not allow them to return any earlier.
They boated 21 pike, the 2 largest tipping the scales at 25.25 lbs and the biggest was caught on the "fly" and weighted 27 lbs. Most of the fish were in the double figures and they reckon they lost more than they boated.
All the fish were handled with care and returned to the water after the photos. It was the 1st time for Reuben to try the Fly Fishing for Pike and he is coming back in September to have another go. Like all anglers the two lads are keeping the exact location of their "day to remember" secret.
Picture above shows Reuben with his pike of 27 lbs taken on the Fly which was tied by his fishing partner Jonathan.
